Women's Golf Improves to Third at WCC Championship

COPPERPOLIS, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's golf team improved its second round by 10 strokes to move into third place after two rounds of the West Coast Conference Championship, hosted at Saddle Creek Golf Club in Copperopolis, a par-72 layout playing 5,823 yards.

Santa Clara carded a first round of 328 and was in fifth, but only two strokes outside of a top-three finish. The Broncos tallied a 318 in round two and total 646 for third place, four strokes ahead of Portland. Pepperdine tallied a seven-over 583 to lead the five-team field and San Francisco is in second after carding a 618. Gonzaga is in fifth place at 660.

Sophomore Samantha Trask led the Broncos with a 78-77--155, 11 strokes over par for a tie at eighth place. Candice Palmer (83-80--163) is in 16th place and Eriko Sato is right behind her in a tie for 17th with an 86-78--164. Stephanie Cope is in 20th with an 85-83--168 and Corey Utsurogi rounds out the Bronco scorecard with an 82-90--172 for 23rd place.

Pepperdine's Leanne Bowditch was the only golfer to record an under-par score, posting a 71-70--143 in the first round. She leads the individual competition.

The third and final round of the WCC Championship will take place Tuesday morning.
