BOISE, Idaho - Megan Stoddart, a transfer from Hawai'i playing in her first tournament as a Santa Clara Bronco, shot a final-round total of 73 Tuesday afternoon at Banbury Golf Course to capture the Bronco Fall Invitational individual title by a stroke over UC Davis' Danielle Cvitanov.
"I started crying when I saw that I had won the tournament title, I'm just still in shock," said Stoddart. "I'd worked so hard for this and today it finally came through. I had a triple [bogey] on 16, but I kept plugging away and I got some good breaks today, one ball looked like it was headed out-of-bounds but it kicked the other way back into play, and I managed to birdie the 17th hole in all three rounds."
Stoddart, who entered Tuesday's final round with a one-stroke lead, played the whole round without any knowledge of how her closest competitors were doing on the rest of the course. It was not until all golfers had finished that final scores began to be posted and she could see that her score of 218 was enough to clip Cvitanov by one stroke.
Besides the ball that kicked back into play, Stoddart also sank a 40-foot putt the save par on the Par-3 third hole. Although she initially thought she had hit the ball too hard, she read the break just right and instead of rolling well past the hole, the ball dunked right to the bottom of the cup.
"For Megan to come in and play her first event as a Bronco is really solid," said head coach Polly Schulze. "Today was a great example of how Megan can play and for her to have her first win as a Bronco makes us very proud. I am proud of her to hang on and stay strong and play very well today."
As a team, Santa Clara finished 12th with a three-round team score of 954. Corey Utsurogi carded a 76 in the third round to finish the tournament in strong fashion. Samantha Trask and Candice Palmer each posted total scores of 252 for the tournament while Eriko Sato carded a 255 and Hilaire Fouts posted a total of 262.
"It was our first event of the fall, and we definitely had some first-tournament jitters," added Schulze on the team's performance. "We'll have some things to work out before heading to Hawaii, but this first individual title makes it a sweet trip for us."
The women's golf team returns to tournament action in three weeks as they travel across the Pacific to Kapolei, Hawai'i to participate in the Kent Youel Invitational.
