CHARLESTON, S.C. - The U.S. Women's National Team wrapped up a seven-day training camp Tuesday, which included last Saturday's 7-0 victory over Mexico, as head coach April Heinrichs named the 18 players that will travel to China for the Four Nations Women's Tournament being held from January 23-27, 2002 in three venues in and around the city of Guangzhou.
Four former or current Santa Clara University standouts were named to the team: Kylie Bivens, Brandi Chastain, Danielle Slaton and Aly Wagner. Slaton and Chastain were members of the U.S. Olympic Team in 2000. Slaton and Wagner were members of the Bronco squad that won the school's first-ever women's soccer national title in December.
Heinrichs made just one change from the roster that faced Mexico, adding defender Bivens, who is the only uncapped player on the roster, in place of forward Danielle Fotopoulos. Thirteen of the players named currently play for WUSA clubs while five played college soccer last year, including Jena Kluegel and Danielle Slaton, both likely to be high picks in the upcoming WUSA draft. The two goalkeepers named to the roster were Jaime Pagliarulo and Lakeysia Beene.
The USA will open the tournament on Jan. 23 vs. Norway at Huadu Stadium, face Germany on Jan. 25 at Yingdong Stadium and finish the tournament in grand fashion, taking on China on Jan. 27 at Tianhe Stadium, site of the 1991 Women's World Cup Final.
