SAN FRANCISCO - Santa Clara University women's soccer standout Aly Wagner was named the 2001 Female Collegiate Athlete of the Year by the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame. She is one of three athletes the Hall of Fame will honor on March 14 at its 23rd Annual Enshrinement Banquet at the Westin, St. Francis.

Wagner, a junior midfielder, will be honored as the 2001 Female Collegiate Athlete of the Year. Leading Santa Clara to its first outright national title, Wagner cemented the win by scoring the game-winning goal in the NCAA Championship match. Successful both on and off the field, Wagner won the Honda Award as the nation's best soccer player and received NSCAA Academic all-America honors.

Named 2001 Pac-10 Player of the Year by vote of the league coaches and The Sporting News, Sean Lampley of the University of California was selected 2001 Male Collegiate Athlete of the Year. He is the only player in school history to rank among Cal's all-time Top 10 in scoring (1st, 1776), rebounding (4th, 889) and assists (10th, 295). Lampley graduated in May 2001 and was chosen in the second round of the NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls.

The 2001 Professional Athlete of the Year is San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds. In his ninth year with the Giants, he became a four-time MVP and the single-season home run king with a record-breaking 73-homer season in 2001. He is baseball's only member of the 400-homer and 400-stolen base club.

This year's event will also honor Dennis Eckersley, George Haines, Mary T. Meagher Plant and Lynn Swann. These individuals will be enshrined into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame as the class of 2002.
