Courage Takes Danielle Slaton with WUSA's First Overall Draft Pick

Feb. 11, 2002

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Santa Clara defender Danielle Slaton was selected by the Carolina Courage to open up the 2002 WUSA Draft, which is underway at the Sunrise Hilton in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Teammate Anna Kraus, also a defender, was selected by the Atlanta Beat as the seventh overall pick.

Both Broncos are San Jose natives and led Santa Clara to the program's first NCAA title with a 1-0 victory over North Carolina in December. Slaton was named the College Cup's Defensive MVP while Kraus earned all-College Cup honors.

Additionally, Alice Gleason, a goalie on the 1998-2000 Bronco squads, was selected in the third round by the San Jose CyberRays.

The second pick went to the Washington Freedom, and head coach Jim Gabarra and his staff picked Florida forward Abby Wambach, and the Boston Breakers chose North Carolina midfielder Jena Kluegel with the third pick.
