SANTA CLARA, Calif.—The Santa Clara women's tennis team competed in the first day of the Cal Nike Invitational in Berkeley, Calif. on Friday. Eight players on the Bronco roster had the opportunity to showcase their talents in the first matches of the 2013-14 preseason. The second day of the tournament continues Saturday with more singles and doubles matches highlighting the Broncos.
In the Blue singles draw, No. 4 seed Katie Le defeated Mayci Jones of BYU in the round of 16 Friday by a score of 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. Chelby Cooke took on the No. 1 seed Zsofi Susanyi of Cal but fell, 6-3, 6-0. Le competes in the quarterfinals Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against No. 6 seed Klara Fabikova of Cal. Cooke will take on Sabi Leon-Chao of San Jose State in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket at 12:00 p.m.
Three Broncos, Stephanie Skaras, Delphine Rouvillois, and Danielle Silva, participated in the Gold singles draw Friday. Rouvillois dropped 1-6, 6-4, 6-3, to the No. 1 seed Sophi Lohscheidt of Sacramento in the round of 32. Skaras could not overcome Morgan Anderson of BYU and fell 6-2, 6-4. Skaras takes on Anne Susdorf of Fresno State Saturday in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket at 11:30 a.m. Freshman Bronco Silva also competes in the quarterfinals Saturday against Anneka Watts of Fresno State at 12:00 p.m.
In the White singles draw, senior Elaine Chesoni found herself in the round of 16 by defeating Andie Mouzes of Sacramento, 6-3, 6-1, but then fell to Francis Dean of Pacific, 6-0, 6-0. Nikki Wolny and Charlotte Newell also participated in the White singles draw but fell in the round of 32.
In the Blue Doubles main draw, partners Le and Silva defeated duo Aleks Filipovski and Barbara Krtickova by a score of 8-3. Le and Silva now take on No. 4 seed Brynn Boren and Gabi DeSimone of USC in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
All final matches will take place on Sunday.
