SANTA CLARA, Calif.—The Santa Clara women's tennis completed the first day of the Saint Mary's Invitational in Moraga, Calif. on Friday. Seven players on the Bronco roster had the opportunity to showcase their talents in the second tournament of the 2013-14 preseason. The second day of the Invite continues Saturday morning with more singles and doubles matches highlighting the Broncos.
In singles play for the red draw, the top seed Katie Le defeated Jennifer Nguyen of Sacramento in the round of 32 Friday by a score of 6-0, 6-1. Also in the red draw, sophomore Chelby Cooke took on Jessica Perez of West Coast Conference opponent LMU and had to end the match early due to injury. Freshman Bronco Daniella Silva could not battle back in the second set of her match against Jade Frampton of the host school Saint Mary's and dropped 6-3, 7-5.
In the blue singles draw, senior Elaine Chesoni dropped her first match in the round of 32 to Pacific's Regina Suarez, 6-4, 6-4. Finally, in the white singles draw, Delphine Rouvillois was victorious in a tight two-set match over Deim Bulatovaite of Sacramento, 7-5, 7-5. Nikki Wolny could not edge Lindsey Kostas of Stanford and lost to a score of 6-0, 6-2. Bronco Stephanie Skaras battled through three-sets against Kathryn Webb of Cal Poly. Webb defeated Skaras 6-0, 4-6, 6-2.
In doubles competition, partners Silva and Le advanced past the quarterfinals topping Amelia Herring and Caroline Doyle of Stanford in the round 16, 8-6. In the quarterfinals, the Broncos defeated Kylie Peek and Samantha Polayes of Gonzaga, 8-5. The semifinals will commence Saturday.
In the blue doubles draw, duo Wolny and Skaras edged Haley Kepler and Sayaka Tsugai of Cal Poly 8-4. In the quarterfinals, the Broncos advanced past Claire Meunier and Claire Jaramshian of UC Davis by a score of 8-3.
Lastly, in the white doubles draw, Bronco partners Cooke and Rouvillois reached the quarterfinals by defeating Katy Krauel and Marina Reimers of Portland, 8-1. In the quarterfinals, Cooke and Rouvillois came up short against Anne Susdorf and Anneka Watts of Fresno State, 8-4.
More singles and doubles play continues Saturday will final matches taking place on Sunday in Moraga.
