SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The No. 20 Santa Clara women's water polo team will open up the 2009 campaign on Saturday, January 24, at California State University East Bay. Game time is set for noon in Hayward, Calif. The Broncos are led by senior tri-captains: All-WWPA Amy Lamb, Allie Lamb and Claire Linney.

"We are excited for our first game of the season," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "CSU East Bay is a talented team with a strong squad. They play in a small pool which will add pressure because we cannot pass the ball around the pool as much as we are used to."

Wilbur, who is in his seventh season, will start off the season facing strong competition. The Pioneer's who will also commence their 2009 season versus the Broncos are the reigning women's water polo Division III National Champions. They return four players on their 14-woman roster. Under the tutelage of seventh season head coach Lisa Cooper, the Pioneers, who have no seniors on the team, are led by sophomores Mary Rosa, who scored 58 goals and tallied 27 assists last season, and Liz Warren, who scored 40 goals and posted 16 assists.
