Broncos Go 3-0 at Slugfest Tournament

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's water polo team posted a perfect 3-0 record after one day of play at the Slugfest Tournament hosted at UC Santa Cruz. The Broncos, 8-7 overall, defeated CSU Monterey Bay, 11-6, University of Pacific, 8-6, and UCSC, 8-2. Senior tri-captain Claire Linney led the SCU offense with eight goals, seven kick outs and a 5-meter penalty. The Santa Cruz, Calif. native also tallied six steals on the day.

"Today was a great day for us collectively," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "We had three big wins and everyone contributed."

In sophomore goalie Wren White's first game back, after missing the last four games with a broken finger, the Los Gatos, Calif. native posted 18 blocks, including a 5-meter penalty block against Santa Cruz, and four steals.

In their first game of the day versus Monterey Bay, junior Meg Zimmerman scored four goals, and Taylor Harkins, Kendal Hildebrand and Jenny Knutson each had a goal. Knutson also posted an assist and Hildebrand drew a kick out. Following their strong opening performance at the Slugfest, the Broncos went head-to-head with Pacific for the third time this season.

Santa Clara entered this weekend's competition after falling to the Tigers of Pacific, 5-3, on Feb. 21. In the back-and-fourth game versus UOP, the Broncos were able to rally back after being down by two goals in the fourth quarter. Rochelle Stowe, Amy Lamb, Knutson, Zimmerman, Harkins and Jade Look each scored a goal, and Linney posted two goals. Knutson tallied two assists and drew a kick out in the contest. Santa Clara is now 2-1 this season versus the Tigers.

The Broncos closed out the day with a third solid win against tournament hosts Santa Cruz. Linney scored a game-high four goals, Harkins scored twice and Allie Lamb and Marina Allen each scored a goal apiece. Amy Lamb had four assists, and both Linney and Zimmerman drew 5-meter penalties. The Broncos tallied seven steals on the Banana Slugs and White posted nine blocks in the cage.

Santa Clara concludes the Slugfest Tournament Sunday, March 1, versus Indiana. Game time is set for 9:45 a.m.
