SANTA CLARA, Calif. - After one day of play at the 2009 NorCal Cup the Broncos breezed by University of Pacific, 8-2, and fell to No. 10 San Jose State, 17-7, at the Sullivan Aquatic Center Saturday. The Cup, co-hosted by California and San Jose State, but played at SCU's home pool, consisted of an eight-team pool.
Santa Clara, who played in the first and last games of the day, fell in the morning to local rivals the Spartans of SJSU, but bounced back in the afternoon to decisively defeat the Tigers of UOP. Sophomore goalie Wren White had a standout day for the Broncos posting 11 blocks versus Pacific and five versus San Jose State.
"Wren had a great day, especially against Pacific," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "She kept our defensive prowess strong and allowed us to get a strong win this afternoon."
Versus UOP the Broncos were led offensively by senior tri-captain Amy Lamb, who scored three goals. Sophomore driver Taylor Harkins tallied two goals, and Marina Allen, Claire Linney and Kendal Hildebrand each scored one goal. Junior Meg Zimmerman had a strong outing with an assist and drew a 5-meter penalty.
In the morning, Santa Clara was outplayed by the tenth-ranked Spartans. Senior utility Allie Lamb worked throughout the game to try to get the Bronco offense going with a goal, a kick out drawn and a 5-meter penalty, along with Zimmerman who had a strong morning game as well, with four kick outs drawn and a goal.
SCU will conclude the 2009 NorCal Cup Sunday, February 1, with games versus Sonoma State, at 9:15 a.m., and University of Hawai'i, at 1 p.m.
