Broncos Split Results in Day One at Triton Tournament

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Santa Clara women's water polo team concluded the first day of play at the Triton Tournament hosted by UC San Diego. The Broncos defeated University of Maryland, 13-12 in overtime, after falling to No. 13 UC Irvine, 14-8. Santa Clara will take on the winner of the CSU Bakersfield - UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, February 7. Game time is to be determined.

Senior Kendal Hildebrand scored the game-winning goal in double overtime versus Maryland. The Bronco driver scored two goals and posted a steal versus the Terrapins. Senior tri-captain Amy Lamb scored four goals, posted four assists, two assists, a kick out and a 5-meter penalty. Senior 2-meter Claire Linney also had a strong comeback game for SCU, as she scored a goal, had an assist, posted two kick outs, drew two 5-meter penalties.

"It was an exciting win for us," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "It was great to get a win in this tournament and hopefully the momentum from our overtime win will carry over into tomorrow's action."

Junior Kathryn Fraser stepped up after sophomore goalie Wren White, who tallied 16 blocks on the day, sprained her finger and had to leave the game at the end of the fourth quarter. Fraser helped lead SCU to the double overtime win over the Terrapins of Maryland.

In the morning, Santa Clara fell to the Anteaters of UC Irvine. Posting a strong game for SCU was the freshmen tandem of Marina Allen and Laura Espinosa. Allen had a goal and an assist, and Espinosa scored a goal, tallied an assist, had four kick outs drawn and posted a 5-meter penalty.
