Late Goal Sends San Diego State Past Women’s Water Polo

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Hannah Carrillo scored a game-high three goals, including the go-ahead strike with less than 2 minutes left, to lift San Diego State to a 6-5 victory over Santa Clara women's water polo in Saturday's matchup of Golden Coast Conference schools.

Hannah Buck scored twice and Hailey Eberle posted one goal and two assists for the Broncos (11-15, 1-5) in a game neither team led by more than one.

Carrillo tied the game at 4-all late with 3:39 left in the third period and Courtney Jarvis pushed the Aztecs (13-14, 5-2) into the lead less than 2 minutes later.

Eberle scored the equalizer midway through the final period, but Carrillo was able to get free for the game-winner with 1:30 left, shortly after an exclusion expired.

The Broncos had two more possessions, but neither of their shot attempts were on target.

"I thought it was a well-played game," Santa Clara head coach Keith Wilbur said. "We did a lot of things right and the defense was solid throughout."

Lydia Dadd suffered the loss in net but was credited with 16 saves, the second-highest total of her career.

"Lydia again played another really good game and gave us a chance," Wilbur said.

Maura Cantoni posted 11 blocks and picked up the win for the Aztecs.

NEXT UP
Santa Clara has just two regular season games left. The Broncos travel on Sunday to face Sonoma State and play host to Pacific on Senior Day, which is set for noon on Saturday.

QUOTABLE
"The big difference that we've talked about as a team from last week to this week is, passing up goal scoring opportunities. Today we didn't pass them up. We stepped in, we were more aggressive, we took those shots that didn't go. But I'm much happier with the effort and mentality."
