SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Gonzaga, ranked No. 17, remained undefeated in West Coast Conference play beating Santa Clara 81-73 Thursday at the Leavy Center. Gonzaga moves to 22-5 and 13-0 in the WCC and Santa Clara falls to 14-16 and 6-7 in the WCC.
With 16 points and 11 rebounds John Bryant in the game, he leads the country with 23 double doubles this season. He moves to seventh on both the Bay Area's all-time career (1064) and single season rebounders list (409). He also tied Dennis Awtrey's single season career record at Santa Clara with 409 rebounds. Bryant's two blocks ties his single season record of 76 (2007-08).
Kevin Foster led the Broncos with 20 points and three steals. He is 10 steals away from tying the SCU freshman record. Marc Trasolini scored 14 points in a career-high 35 minutes.
After Gonzaga got out to a 17-8 lead in the first half (14:33), the Broncos fought back, going on a 16-8 run to take the lead 24-23 with seven minutes left in the half. The score went back and forth for the rest of the half with four lead changes, as the Broncos went into the locker room down by one, 36-35 Gonzaga. Foster had 13 first half points followed by Bryant with eight.
The second half was more of the same. With six minutes left in the game Gonzaga took control, increasing its lead until it led by 11 with 1:30 left to play. After five missed free throws by Gonzaga, Santa Clara capitalized coming within six, but the Bulldogs made the next six free throws to seal the game.
The Bulldogs' Josh Heytvelt led Gonzaga with a career high 29 points, scoring 16 in the second half. Matt Bouldin helped Gonzaga's cause, adding 23 points of his own.
