SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Kevin Foster scored 19 of his 21 points in the second half to help Santa Clara rally from an 18-point deficit to beat Belmont 83-80 in the first round of the Cable Car Classic on Monday night. Santa Clara will play UTEP in the Cable Car Classic Championship game on Tues., Dec. 30 at 8 pm. Belmont and James Madison will play at 6 pm in the consolation finals.
It was on a night when Santa Clara retired all-time leading scorer Kurt Rambis' jersey at halftime. Rambis finished his career in 1980 and is still the all-time leading scorer with 1,736 points and second in all-time rebounds with 1,037.
James Rahon added 15 points as the Broncos (6-7) snapped a three-game losing streak. Also scoring in double figures was John Bryant, who had 11 points and eight boards; Marc Trasolini, who had 10 points and nine boards; and Perry Petty, who scores 11 points, adding a career-high eight assists.
Matthew Dotson scored 18 points to lead the Bruins (5-5), who had won three of their past four games. Andy Wicke had 17 and Alex Renfroe added 16.
Foster and Rahon hit consecutive baskets to put the Broncos up 75-71 with just over five minutes remaining to play.
Foster scored 10 of his points as the Broncos scored the first 18 of the second half to tie it at 46-46, after trailing 46-28 at the half.
The Bruins missed five shots and turned the ball over six times during a scoreless streak that lasted just over six minutes.
