Basketball to play Florida Atlantic Tuesday in NIT Preseason Tip-off Tournament at 5:30 pm

Nov. 18, 2008

Santa Clara, 1-1, will play Florida Atlantic, 1-1, as part of the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-off Tournament on Tues., Nov. 18 at 5:30 pm (Pacific). UAB and Arizona will play for the right to advance to the Final Four of the NIT in New York City on Nov. 26 and 28. Where SCU and Florida Atlantic advance to play as part of next week's two rounds in the NIT Season Tip-off on Mon., Nov. 24 and Tues., Nov. 25 will be determined in the next 48 hours.

Santa Clara fell 64-61 to UAB on Monday night with John Bryant pulling down his 26th career double-double and second straight this season when he scored 17 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. Bryant is just one of eight Santa Clara players to score more than 1,110 points in his career and pull down 700 plus rebounds.

Florida Atlantic fell on Monday night to Arizona, 75-62.

The Broncos are led by three players averaging double figures, but oddly enough only one is a starter. John Bryant averages 18 ppg and non-starters Perry Petty and Kevin Foster average 13.5 ppg and 10.0 ppg respectively. Bryant leads the team with 13.0 rpg with Ben Dowdell averaging 5.0 rpg as the second-best. Marc Trasolini leads the Broncos with 2.5 bpg and Bryant is right behind him with 2.0 bpg. Listen

Santa Clara basketball games are broadcast live via the Bronco Radio Network, which consists of KDOW-AM 1220 and Broncos All-Access on the web at www.SantaClaraBroncos.com. Anthony Passarelli is in his second season as the men's play-by-play announcer after six seasons of handling those duties for SCU women's basketball.

vs. Florida Atlantic

Santa Clara will be playing Florida Atlantic for the first time. The Owls are led by first-year head coach Mike Jarvis. Jarvis, who has a career record of 364-203 in 20 years of coaching, has also been the head coach at Boston University (1985-90), George Washington (1990-98)and St. John's University (1998-04).

The Owls return three starters and seven letterwinners from a team that finished at 15-18 last year, including 8-10 in the Sun Belt Conference. They were coached by Rex Walters, the new USF coach, the last two weeks.

The Last Time out for Florida Atlantic

Chase Budinger scored 21 points and Nic Wise added 19 points and nine assists, and Arizona opened the post-Lute Olson era with a 75-62 victory over Florida Atlantic in the NIT Season Tip-Off on Mon., Nov. 17.

With interim coach Russ Pennell on the bench and hundreds of empty seats in McKale Center, Arizona fell behind 15-7 before rallying to take a 24-22 lead on Budinger's driving dunk with 6 minutes to play in the first half. The Wildcats didn't trail again.

Paul Graham III scored 23 points for the Owls (1-1), who were without senior forward Carlos Monroe, their all-time leading rebounder and the No. 5 scorer in school history. He is dealing with eligibility issues.
