ATHENS, Ga.-- With the score changing hands 10 times and adding in four ties, a back and forth ballgame ended up a 54-48 victory for the Georgia Bulldogs over the Santa Clara Broncos in Athens, Ga. as part of the NIT Season Tipoff Tournament.
Santa Clara will play Arizona Tues., Nov. 25 in Athens in the first game and Georgia will finish its play in the tournament afterwards with a game vs. Mississippi Valley State.
While Georgia scored just one basket in the last 12:05 of the game, a two pointer at 3:45, the Bulldogs did connect on 14 free throws during that span.
Georgia (4-1) won with defense, finishing with 11 steals and nine blocked shots while holding Santa Clara to 37.8 percent (17 of 45) shooting from the field. The Broncos outrebounded the 'Dawgs 35 to 27, hitting 10 of 12 free throws to Georgia's 18-24, including 17-22 in the second half.
Terrance Woodbury led Georgia with 14 points. Freshman Trey Thompkins added 10 points in his debut after missing the Bulldogs' first four games with an ankle injury.
The 6-foot-11, 275-pound Bryant scored 12 points and had 13 rebounds, collecting the 27th double-double of his career. Michael Santos aded 10 points in the losing effort and Kevin Foster had five rebounds, scoring six points.
Santa Clara (1-3) committed 25 turnovers, leading to 22 points for Georgia.
Bryant had back-to-back baskets in the Broncos' 9-0 run for a 31-29 lead about four minutes into the second half.
