Men's Golf Kicks Off Spring Season

Feb. 6, 2009

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's golf team begins its 2009 spring campaign on Monday, Feb. 9 at the Mardi Gras Classic hosted by the University of New Orleans. The two-day event will be held at the TPC of Louisiana Golf Course, and the Broncos will face a tough set of competitors in Campbell, Kennesaw State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, McNeese State, Mercer, Nicholls State, Southeastern Louisiana, Southern Miss, St. Mary's (Calif.), Texas-San Antonio, Troy, West Florida, and host UNO .

"It's our first time in this event," said head coach Robert Miller. "We are looking forward to something new and different. It's the TPC course that they play the PGA Zurich Classic event at in New Orleans. The guys have seen the course on television and it is always fun to play on the courses the pros play on."

Representing the Broncos will be senior Jonathan Keane, junior Jimmy Cacho and freshman Ronnald Monaco. The fourth and fifth slots to play in the tournament are still up for grabs, after junior Scott Travers decided to redshirt.

"Really it is the four and five spots on the team that will make the difference on how we do this spring," said Miller. "All the rest of the players on the team have a real chance to contribute in those spots."

Santa Clara is looking forward to the spring after a promising fall season where many players gained valuable experience. The Broncos will compete in five tournaments, bringing the team to a close at the Stanford Invitational on April 18-19.
