Mehl, Travers Look to Qualify for the U.S. Open Next Week

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Freshman Cory Mehl and junior Scott Travers will represent Santa Clara men's golf program in the Sectional Qualifiers for the 2009 U.S. Open on Monday, June 8. Mehl will compete at Tumble Creek Club in Roslyn, Wash., while Travers will head to Saticoy Country Club in Somis, Calif.

Both Mehl and Travers competed in local qualifiers on May 11. Travers (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) medaled at Ruby Hill Golf Club in Pleasanton with a round of 68; while Mehl (Seattle, Wash.) shot a 74 and went on to win in a playoff at Half Moon Bay Golf Links.

SCU also had three student-athletes qualify for the 98th Annual California Golf Association Amateur Championship that will be held on June 22-27 at Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, Calif. Danny Cacho, Ronnald Monaco and Travers will compete against some of California's toughest amateurs. Looking to join them on the links are alternates Tyler Ichikawa and Bronco head men's golf coach Robert Miller.

Travers and Cacho both competed at El Marcero Country Club in Davis, Calif., while Monaco battled at Cypress Ridge Golf Course in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Monaco (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) led the Broncos, shooting an even-par 72 and finishing tied for fourth. Travers placed third at El Marcero with a round of 73. Cacho (Fairfield, Calif.) won the final qualifying spot after a playoff. He shot a 75 for the day.

Alternates Ichikawa (Mountain View, Calif.) and Miller (Saratoga, Calif.) competed at the Oakdale Golf and Country Club and the Olympic Club, respectively. Miller was named the first alternate out of the Olympic Club's qualifiers with a round of 78. Ichikawa earned a second alternate position with a round of 76 at Oakdale.
