DALY CITY, Calif. - Santa Clara men's golfer Scott Travers concluded play at the 98th Annual California State Amateur Championship on Friday at Lake Merced GC in Daly City. Travers advanced to the quarterfinals, but was topped 3 and 1 by defending champion and No. 2 seed Nick Delio of Valencia.

Travers, who fought back in the Round of 16 to win his match 2 and 1 on Thursday, saw his momentum continue throughout the first four holes and he quickly gained a two-stroke advantage. Even though Delio evened the playing field after the fifth and sixth wholes, Travers rallied to regain a stroke lead after the seventh hole. He maintained that lead through the eighth hole, but a birdie for Delio and an even par for Travers made it all squared once again.

The match remained tied for the ninth through 12th holes before Delio broke away with a one-up lead after the 13th and a two-up advantage after the 14th. Travers was still playing solid golf during those holes and went on to go par, birdie, and par in the final three. But par and two straight birdies for Delio sealed the victory. The match was called after the 17th hole (par of 67), with Travers finishing one-under 66 and Delio shooting three-under 64.

For the match play portion of the tournament, Travers tallied 13 birdies in 48 holes played, along with one eagle.
