SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's golf team finished in a tie for fifth place at the 2009 West Coast Conference Championships. Freshman Cory Mehl had his best finish of the season as he placed fourth. The Broncos had a relatively young team this year as senior Jonathan Keane was the lone senior contributor this season. Yet, Mehl and fellow freshman Ronnald Monaco were solid contributors for the Broncos this season.
Keane Wraps Up Career at SCU
Senior Keane wrapped up his senior season with four Top-20 finishes. The Edmunds, Wash. native had his best finish of the season at the Bronco Invitational where finished in fourth place. Keane paced the Broncos in three tournaments this season. He had the second best scoring average on the team at just under 74 strokes a round.
Older Cacho Has Solid Junior Season
Junior Jimmy Cacho racked up five Top-20 finishes this season while having a tied for sixth finish at the Mardi Gras Invitational in New Orleans. He paced the Broncos in seven tournaments this season. His younger brother Daniel finished up his freshman season this year. This bro duo is looking to have some strong showings next season.
Travers Takes Medical Redshirt
Junior Scott Travers was looking forward to continuing his strong play from last season. The Trabuco Canyon native was diagnosed with mononucleosis part way through the first part this season. Travers was named Player of the Month in March of last season and was named to the All-WCC first team last season after six Top-20 finishes that included an individual win at the UCI Anteater Invitational. Travers is looking forward to picking up where he left off next season.
Strong Showing at the WCC Championships
The Broncos tied for fifth at the WCC Championships at the Hiddenbrooke Golf Course in Vallejo. Mehl and Jimmy Cacho both posted top-10 finishes and the Broncos fired a sizzling 281 for the second 18-holes on the first day. It was their best team round of the season. The Broncos had three of their five scores in red numbers as they finished at seven-under par for the round. Mehl and junior Alex Bon each fired their lowest rounds of their careers while posting a 69 and 68, respectively. It tied for their team-best finish at conference since 2006.
The Broncos logged some hefty travel miles this season. They traveled to Oahu for the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate back in November where they posted a tied for 14th place finish and Jimmy Cacho led the way with a tied for 18th finish. Then the Broncos logged some more frequent flier miles as they traveled to New Orleans in February for the Mardi Gras Invitational where they posted a sixth place finish. Cacho led the way for the Broncos again with a tied for sixth finish. Then it was off to Puerto Rico in March for the Palmas Del Real Invitational where the team placed fifth. Cacho led the way once again with a tied for eleventh finish.
