SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's and women's golf teams begin competition at the 2009 West Coast Conference Championships on Apr. 13-14 at the Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in Vallejo. Live stats will be available on www.golfstat.com.

The Hiddenbrooke Golf Club is designed by golf legend Arnold Palmer. The women's course is laid out over 5,974 yards and boasts a par of 72. The men's course will be spread out over 6,689 yards and will also boast a par of 72. The Bronco women will compete against the four other conference foes Pepperdine, San Francisco, Portland, and Gonzaga. The Bronco men will battle against conference rivals San Diego, Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, Portland, San Francisco, and Gonzaga. It will be a 36-hole tournament over the course of two days.

"The team's goal at conference is to finish a clear third," said women's head coach Polly Schulze. "Last year we tied for third and that is not where this team belongs. We've been working hard on improving our success rate on short putts as we know the difference just one shot can make. We had been struggling from short distances but the team has significantly improved in that area. The team is playing solid and they are looking forward to being competitive in Vallejo. Miki is looking forward to seeing the Pepperdine players for the first time this year and it will be fun to see how she competes against them. We are ready and looking forward to the challenge."

The Bronco women hope to build upon their tied for third finish last year. Last season senior Corey Utsurogi led the Broncos with a tenth place finish. The Broncos will be led by sophomore Miki Ueoka who is coming off back-to-back individual title wins and back-to-back Player of The Month Honors. Pepperdine is ranked 12th in the nation and is led by the 29th ranked individual Taylor Karle. San Francisco is ranked 25th in the nation and is led by Danielle Cvitanov, who has placed in the top-ten in every tournament this season. Last season Pepperdine took first place with Karle and then senior Leanne Bowditch tying for first place honors.

The Bronco men hope to build upon their sixth place finish last year. Last season sophomore Scott Travers led the Broncos with a tied for ninth finish. Travers has taken a medical redshirt this season. The Broncos will be led by senior Jonathan Keane and junior Jimmy Cacho. Pepperdine is ranked 35th in the nation and is led by the 22nd ranked individual Andrew Putnam who has placed in the top-20 in every tournament this season. San Diego is ranked 66th and is led by Alex Ching and Jake Yount. San Diego took first place last season with Yount and Saint Mary's senior Chadd Cocco tying for first place honors.
