DALY CITY, Calif. - Golfer Scott Travers produced a solid round of golf Wednesday morning as he defeated George Gandranata by five strokes to advance to the Round of 16 of the 98th Annual California State Amateur Championships at Lake Merced GC in Daly City. Travers will tee off on Thursday, June 25 at 8:20 a.m. against Kevin Fryer.

The Trabuco Canyon, Calif. native held the advantage from the second hole to the 14th, where the match was called. By the 10th hole, which he eagled, Travers had earned a five-stroke lead and continue to hold that same lead for the next four holes. The par through 14 holes was 56. Travers finished five-under 51 while Gandranata ended even-56.

Fryer, a 34-year-old from San Ramon, tied for 24th during stroke play at one-over 145 and defeated Tyler Crawford by two strokes. Fryer and Crawford were tied through the first two holes at even par but with a birdie Crawford took the lead. However, Fryer only allowed Crawford to get ahead of him by two strokes. Fryer rallied to even the playing field in the 10th and 12th holes, and then took a one stroke lead at the 13th and never looked back.

The road to the championship then continues with the Quarter- and Semifinals on Friday, June 26. The final two amateurs will then fight for the California State Championship on Saturday, June 27.
