SAN DIEGO, Calif. – For just the second time in 14 meetings Santa Clara suffered a loss to West Coast Conference rival San Diego. The host Toreros received a first-half goal from last season's WCC Player of the Year Patrick Wallen in the 19th minute and Elijah Galbraith-Knapp knocked in an insurance goal midway through the second half as USD prevailed 2-0.

Santa Clara (6-5-3; 2-4 WCC) has lost four straight. The Broncos were trying to salvage a split on their two-game Southern California road swing after a 1-0 overtime loss to LMU Friday.

San Diego (7-5-1; 4-1-1 WCC), who beat USF on Friday, remains among the league leaders. Despite a storied soccer tradition at USD, the Toreros have struggled in their series with the Broncos. USD avenges last season's 2-1 loss at Torero Stadium and the win improves their all-time record against SCU at home to 7-10-1.

For the first time this season Larry Jackson started in goal for Santa Clara. Jackson, the junior from East Palo Alto, saved three of the five shots USD put on target. Offensively, Santa Clara continues to out-shoot its opponents – posting an 11-9 shooting edge over San Diego Sunday – but the Broncos have not scored during their current four-game slide.

The match was extremely physical, with the two sides combining for 29 fouls. Trailing 2-0 in the closing moments, Santa Clara's Johnny Martinez was cited for a red card. The Broncos played without starting defenders Mykell Bates (injury) and Gabriel Romero (red-carded against LMU).
