SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Despite out-shooting LMU 25-12 and generating 15 corner kick opportunities, Santa Clara was held scoreless for the fifth straight game, drawing with the Lions 0-0 Friday night at Buck Shaw Stadium.

 

Santa Clara (6-5-4; 2-4-1 WCC) forward Erik Hurtado fired off a career-high 10 shots and junior classmate Larry Jackson made five saves in goal for the Broncos, who will host league-leading San Diego on Sunday afternoon.

"The shots and the corner kicks and everything else is indicative of how much attacking we did today," said Santa Clara head coach Cameron Rast. "We had some great chances, some of the best chances we've had in the last four games. We had enough chances today to win multiple games but we just can't score that magical goal."

LMU (5-9-1; 3-3-1 WCC) - picked to win the league in the preseason coaches poll - got an eight-save effort out of junior keeper Max Young. The Lions entered Friday night's match 2-12-3 all-time at Buck Shaw.

It marked the second time in two weeks these two teams have played into overtime. The Lions pulled out a 1-0 extra session victory over the Broncos in Los Angeles on October 14.

"For long stretches tonight we did exactly what we wanted to do, unfortunately we did not capitalize," added Rast.

Santa Clara will be hosting a San Diego (7-6-1; 4-2-1 WCC) team that lost a lopsided 4-0 decision at San Francisco (6-6-2; 4-2-1 WCC) Friday.

"San Diego is a tough team, they are good," said Rast, looking ahead to Sunday's match. "They lost tonight badly to USF, which pulls them back towards the middle (of the WCC standings) and brings more teams back into play. Unfortunately if we could have got the result tonight it would have pulled us back into play, opening up things, and that's what we needed."

"The bottom line is we have to finish. In the end that's why the goal scorers around the world get paid so much money. It's an art. That's the artistry of the game. We'll break through."
