SCU Men’s Soccer Initiates Community Service Project in Conjunction with Bay Area After-School All-Stars

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara University men's soccer team was out in the community this month, volunteering their time in support of the Bay Area After-School All-Stars program. The first event of the team's spring quarter community service project was held on Saturday, March 10 at Walter L. Bachrodt Elementary School.

Santa Clara student-athletes refereed at the Junior All-Stars Soccer Tournament, which featured eight local elementary schools. River Glen Elementary School took home the honor of winning first place prior to the Broncos helping serve the post-tournament barbeque enjoyed by the participants and their families, complete with hot dogs, chicken skewers, fruit, pasta, drinks and cookies.

The tournament and barbeque kicked off the team's spring quarter community service initative, where SCU student-athletes volunteer at Ocala Middle School, Fischer Middle School, and the Renaissance Academy in East San Jose, working with young students who are also participants in the Bay Area After-School All-Stars program.

The Broncos will be working with the middle school students for one hour in the classroom and one hour on the field twice a week during the months of April and May.

After-School All-Stars was founded as the Inner-City Games Foundation in 1992 in Los Angeles when actor and activist Arnold Schwarzenegger set-out to give inner-city youth positive alternatives to drugs, gangs and violence. The San Jose chapter (originally named the Inner City Games of Silicon Valley) was founded in 1997 with significant support from the Silicon Valley Sports Authority. In 2003, the organization was renamed After-School All-Stars of Greater San Jose, and it began a period of sustained programmatic growth. In 2009, the organization ran programs in 26 schools directly reaching over 2,600 students everyday with an operating budget of nearly $4 million.
