BERKELEY, Calif. – Santa Clara University, who had already beaten Stanford and tied then-No. 6 UCLA, remained atop the West Coast Conference standings after a convincing 4-2 road win at No. 14 California Friday afternoon.

This 2011 Santa Clara (4-1-1) team accomplished something that no other Bronco group had done in the last 30 years, and that was winning on the road at Cal. Trailing early in the opening period SCU rallied to take the lead at halftime on goals by David Castellanos (pictured) and Erik Hurtado. Phillip Muscarella added another score just following the intermission to put the Broncos in front 3-1.

"We are tough and we are proving we can play some soccer," said Cameron Rast, SCU's four-time WCC Coach of the Year, who notches his first win over Cal as a head coach. "This win is important because we took a big step, a step that we haven't been able to take in the past few years."

California (2-2-2) – an NCAA tournament final eight team in 2010 – was ranked preseason No. 7 by the NSCAA. The Golden Bears had not lost to the Broncos at home since 1980.

Trailing by two goals late in the second half, the Golden Bears pulled within one on John Fitzpatrick's third goal of the year. However a Cal red card with 15 minutes left on Christian Dean gave SCU a man advantage down the stretch.

Insuring the win for SCU was newcomer Glenn Vass, who played in the Bayern Munich youth system as a young player in Germany. Vass netted his second goal of the season on a cross by fellow underclassman Carlos Montes. Montes had a career-best two assists and Hurtado's goal in the first half was his league-leading fourth of the 2011 campaign.

"This separates this group from a lot of groups we have had in the past," added Rast. "This shows that we have the potential to be a special team."

Santa Clara will play twice next week, facing San Jose State on the road Thursday, Sept. 22 before returning home to Buck Shaw Stadium Sunday, Sept. 25 for the team's non-conference finale with Harvard.
