SCU Seniors Eric Masch and Kevin Klasila Recognized by WCC for Academic Excellence

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference announced its 2011 Men's Soccer All-Academic team. Santa Clara University seniors (l-r) Kevin Klasila and Eric Masch were honored among the league's top student-athletes.

Masch earns WCC All-Academic honors for the second time. The senior forward from nearby San Jose and Bellarmine Prep has enjoyed an outstanding college career. He scored 16 goals as a Bronco – three coming in consecutive games down the stretch of this season to help SCU stay in the race for the 2011 WCC title and earn him WCC Player of the Week honors on Nov. 7, 2011.

Not only has he been one of the best forwards in the WCC over the past few seasons, he's also drawn recognition as one of the league's top students, earning prior academic All-WCC honors and a nomination for the Lowe's Senior Class Award, given to one student-athlete nationally that embodies the attributes of community, classroom, character and competition.

Klasila is a fifth-year senior who will go down in the record books as one of the most accomplished goalkeepers in Santa Clara history. He led the Broncos to a pair of conference championships and been named an all-league honoree twice. His 17 career shutouts rank fifth all-time at Santa Clara and his 66 saves during the Broncos' WCC Championship run last season was an SCU all-time top 10.

Klasila's goals against average during his true freshman season in 2007 was fifth best in WCC history. He owns 145 career saves, which is seventh best all-time at SCU. He posted six shutouts this season and was named the WCC Player of the Week on Aug. 20, 2011 after shutting out Stanford.

At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport.  To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to his team.
