SCU Teammates Mykell Bates and Brandon Zimmerman Selected in MLS Draft

NEW YORK – Santa Clara University teammates Mykell Bates and Brandon Zimmerman were taken in today's Major League Soccer 2012 Supplemental Draft. Toronto FC selected Bates with the fourth pick of the second round (No. 61 overall). Zimmerman went to the Philadelphia Union with the 13th pick of round four (No. 108 overall).

"We are very happy for both Brandon and Mykell," said Santa Clara head coach Cameron Rast. "They are two quality players and individuals who we hope will have long careers in the game."

The two college seniors helped the Broncos win the 2010 West Coast Conference Championship. Both were named All-WCC First Team players this fall – Zimmerman earned all-league honors in each of his four seasons as Santa Clara's starting midfielder.

Bates was one of just 52 college seniors to receive an initial invitation to participate in the 2012 adidas MLS Player Combine earlier this month. The Roseville, Calif. native and recent Santa Clara graduate became the 18th Bronco drafted by an MLS club.

Zimmerman became the 19th Bronco drafted by the MLS and according to a recent release by MLSsoccer.com, SCU is tied for second all-time among schools on the West Coast in developing professional players. Since 2006, the Broncos have been among the top eight programs in the NCAA developing professional players overall.

"I'm very pleased that they were identified as players that can play at the next level," added Rast. "In a year we did not accomplish all of our team goals, these two still had a big impact in our success. We will be excited and anxious to watch them develop at the next level."
