HEAD COACH CAMERON RAST (10^th-year)
Since taking over the Bronco men's soccer program nine years ago, SCU alumnus and Hall of Famer Cameron Rast has led his alma mater to six NCAA tournaments and four West Coast Conference Championships. He was a former All-America player on SCU's 1989 co-National Championship team and U.S. Olympic Team captain in 1992. He spent eight seasons as an assistant coach at SCU from 1994-2001. Last year, in 2010, his ninth year as SCU head coach, the Broncos won the WCC title. Rast has reached the 100-win milestone as a head coach and has moved into third place all-time in WCC coaching victories. The announcement of Rast being named the 2010 WCC 'Coach of the Year' marked the fourth time he has earned the honor. The Broncos advanced into the NCAA College Cup Final Four in 2006. He owns a 104-52-34 career record and is 53-14-19 all-time at SCU's Buck Shaw Stadium.

SANTA CLARA
The Broncos have an opportunity to make some serious noise on the national stage this weekend against UCLA and New Mexico. Off to a 1-0 start, Santa Clara is looking to make its 20^th appearance in the NCAA tournament and repeat as West Coast Conference champs. Positive results this weekend would no-doubt improve SCU's postseason chances and give the team momentum as it begins a busy, eight-game month of September. The x-factor this weekend may be the Broncos' home-field advantage at Buck Shaw Stadium, where the team is 53-14-19 since 2002.

UCLA
Like Santa Clara, UCLA returns all 11 of its starters from its NCAA tournament team of 2010. The Bruins went 16-5-1 and advanced in the NCAA's Elite Eight, before losing to Louisville. Ironically, the Bruins opened the new season against No. 1 Louisville last week, dropping a 2-0 decision on the road. UCLA is picked to win the Pac-12 this year and have gone 20-4-6 against conference opponents over the past three seasons. The Bruins Sophomore midfielder Kelyn Rowe is an All-America player and a candidate for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy. UCLA was ranked as high as No. 2 nationally in the preseason polls.

ALL-TIME VERSUS UCLA
UCLA is among a small number of opponents who owns the all-time edge over Santa Clara. The Broncos are 9-16-4 all-time kicking off against the Bruins. The two teams haven't met since 2008, when the Bruins recorded a 2-0 shutout at Drake Stadium in Los Angeles.

NEW MEXICO
The Lobos are ranked No. 10 in this week's NSCAA West Regional Rankings, just three spots behind the Broncos. Tenth-year head coach Jeremy Fishbein has consistently guided New Mexico in the NCAA tournament and returns eight starters from last year's 9-6-5 team. New Mexico got the season off to a good start, beating Towson in its opener. Prior to facing Santa Clara, the Lobos will square off against Cal Poly Friday night in San Louis Obispo.

ALL-TIME VERSUS NEW MEXICO
With only one match in their past, Santa Clara and New Mexico's history is yet to truly unfold. After a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation in 1992, the teams struggled to convert in overtime and exited the field with a scoreless draw. Currently, the all-time record stands at 0-0-1.

LAST TIME OUT
Seniors David Castellanos and Alex Fitschen connected on a first-half goal for Santa Clara as the host Broncos beat Stanford 1-0 in the men's soccer season-opener for both schools Saturday night at Buck Shaw Stadium. Castellanos, who sat out the entire 2010 season with injury, subbed in late in the first half and immediately made his presence felt, setting up Fitschen for the game's only goal. Santa Clara (1-0) – the reigning WCC Champions – is playing each of its first five games at home. Stanford (0-1) nearly tied the game in the closing moments, getting one if its best chances during a flurry of action at the six-minute mark. However, SCU senior goalkeeper Kevin Klasila made an outstanding save with a one-handed swat to deny the Cardinal on a breakaway.

QUOTABLE
"Locking (Stanford) down and getting a shutout, that's what you want," said SCU head coach Cameron Rast after beating Stanford 1-0 Saturday night. "You want a tough first game, you want to battle for it because you want to see that (our players) have what it takes to be a good team. "We have a big weekend coming up. We'll enjoy this, but come Monday it will be back to work."

KLASILA NAMED WCC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Santa Clara senior goalkeeper Kevin Klasila is the first West Coast Conference men's soccer Player of the Week for the 2011 season. Klasila made a game-saving stop in the closing moments of Santa Clara's 1-0 season-opening victory over Stanford with five minutes to play Saturday night at Buck Shaw Stadium. It was one of three saves on the night for Klasila, a two-time All-WCC honorable mention selection.

MYKELL BATES NO. 8 PRO PROSPECT AMONG COLLEGE SENIORS
Santa Clara senior co-captain Mykell Bates was listed as the nation's No. 8 best pro prospect among college seniors according to TopDrawerSoccer.com. The online publication is showcasing Joe Mauceri's observations on 'Joe's Big Board', a listing of the top 100 prospects for professional soccer in the college senior class.

IN THE RANKINGS
Santa Clara moved up to No. 24 in the latest national poll released by TopDrawerSoccer.com. The Broncos are No. 7 in the NSCAA West Regional Rankings and receiving votes in the NSCAA Top 25. UCLA dropped to No. 13 in the NSCAA Top 25 after losing to No. 1 Louisville, but are No. 4 by College Soccer News, No. 6 by Soccer America and No. 7 by TopDrawerSoccer. New Mexico is No. 10 in the NSCAA West Regional Rankings and like SCU, receiving votes in the NSCAA Top 25.

BATES, HURTADO NAMED 2011 PRESEASON ALL-WCC
Mykell Bates and Erik Hurtado were among ten student-athletes around the league named to the 2011 Preseason All-West Coast Conference Team. Hurtado has emerged as one of the nation's most dangerous scorers. The junior from Beaverton, Ore., was named a 2010 All-WCC First Team player and garnered National Player of the Week honors last November by College Soccer News (CSN). Bates was also named an All-WCC First Team honoree in 2010. The senior and three-year starting defender from Roseville, Calif., led the team in minutes played (1,852) as a sophomore and is serving as team captain for the second straight year.

ERIC MASCH TABBED FOR LOWE'S SENIOR CLASS AWARD
Santa Clara University final-year student-athlete Eric Masch has been selected as candidates for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. The award recognizes the attributes of senior student-athletes in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition. From the list of 30 candidates, a national media committee will select ten finalists for the 2011 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in early October.

DID YOU KNOW?
SCU assistant coach Jeff Baicher distributed 20 assists to help lead the Broncos to the 1989 co-National Championship. Those 20 assists rank second all-time in West Coast Conference (WCC) single-season history. Baicher was named the WCC Player of the Year that season.

BRONCOS PICKED TO FINISH THIRD IN WCC
Despite returning all 11 of its starters from its 2010 WCC Championship squad, the Broncos were picked to finish third as a team in the league's preseason poll.

2011 PRESEASON AT US OLYMPIC TRAINING CENTER
Shortly after initiating its preseason training for the 2011 season, the Broncos traveled to Southern California for a week to practice at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.

FROM THE CAPTAINS
The Broncos have named Mykell Bates and Murphy Campbell team co-captains. The two seniors lead a group that is trying to repeat as West Coast Conference Champions and make a deep run in the NCAA tournament.

"This year we are going to build off the success we had last season," said Bates, who is one of nine returning All-WCC players on the 2011 roster. "Our ultimate goal is make an appearance in the College Cup in Alabama."

PLAYING UP
The Broncos will face one of their toughest pre-conference tests in recent memory. Both UCLA and California advanced into the NCAA College Cup tournament's final eight last year, while New Mexico, Harvard and Stanford have been perennial NCAA qualifiers.

HOME SUCCESS
Contributing to the Broncos' strong soccer tradition is the team's home field advantage at Buck Shaw Stadium. Under Rast, the Broncos have gone 53-14-19 at home since he took over as head coach in 2002. The team is 212-80-38 all-time when playing at home, dating back to the program's first year of soccer in 1967.

THE WCC'S BEST TEAM
The Broncos won the 2010 WCC Championship by posting a 7-1-4 conference record. No other WCC program has won more games (125) over the past decade or more WCC titles (5) than Santa Clara. Rast has been honored as the league's 'Coach of the Year' four times in his nine seasons and in the past three years, SCU is 31-13-16 against league opponents.
