SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Bronco men's tennis team took on No. 1 seeded Pepperdine in the West Coast Conference championship match. Despite a great run throughout the weekend, the Waves defeated SCU 4-1 to win the WCC title. Santa Clara exits the tournament at 18-7 on the season, 5-2 in WCC contests.
The Broncos had a difficult time getting things going on Sunday on the doubles side of play. At No. 1 doubles, Brian Brogan and Jay Wong fell to Pepperdine's Bassam Beidas and Alex Llompart, 8-3. Kyle Dandan and Grant Fleming evened things up at the No. 3 spot with a 8-4 victory over Sebastian Fanselow and Alejandro Moreno. However, SCU was edged out of the doubles point as Andrew Kells and Nicolas Vinel fell to Finn Tearney and Hugh Clarke, 8-5.
Santa Clara worked to come back in singles action as Tom Pham grabbed a win at the No. 6 position to keep SCU in the match. Pham defeated the Waves' Danny Moss 6-1, 6-2. Despite a strong effort the Broncos were edged out in the end as Brogan and Wong fell at No. 1 and 3 singles, respectively.
SCU finishes this season having earned it best overall record and best conference tournament performance since the 2000-2001 season.
