Men's Tennis To Take on No. 40 Cal

Jan. 25, 2010

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - On Tuesday, Jan. 26, the Santa Clara men's tennis team will make the short trip to Berkeley to take on the UC Berkeley Golden Bears. Cal is currently ranked No. 40 nationally and is coming off of two season opening road wins versus Southern Methodist University and Tulsa. The Broncos are looking to continue their winning streak after defeating UC Santa Cruz and UC Davis in an opening day double header.

In this past fall's tournament season, several Broncos matched up with Cal opponents. In the Battle of the Bay tournament, sophomore Andrew Kells defeated Cal sophomore Nick Andrews in the first round before going on to win the tournament championship. In the same tournament, freshman Grant Fleming defeated Cal's Sky Lovill in three sets. On the doubles side of tournament play, the duo of sophomore Nicolas Vinel and Kells grabbed a Battle of the Bay win over Berkeley's Lovill and Zach Gilbert.

These two teams have not met in a dual match since Jan. 30, 2007, when the Golden Bears secured a 6-1 victory. Three years after their last dual meeting this Bay Area match up should be an early season test for both promising programs.

First serve is set for 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at UC Berkeley's Hellman Tennis Complex.
