SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Santa Clara University softball team defeated rival San Jose State 7-1 and 6-0 this afternoon at the SJSU Softball Complex. The Broncos (6-11) were led by junior outfielder Jessica Clee's two-run homerun in the first game, as she went 5-5 at the plate. The Spartans fall to 2-13 on the season.

"We scored early in the first game and just kept on scoring," head coach Marcy Crouch said, after her team recorded 17 hits in the opener. "We were never satisfied and kept adding runs to the board. Our girls played well and hard, which is exactly what we asked of them."

Today's contest is part of the two schools' Rivalry Series. SCU earned two points with today's win and now holds a 15-8 lead over the Spartans. Five more points are up for grabs this weekend, as the baseball programs play a three-game series this weekend and the women's water polo teams square off on Sunday afternoon. The annual winner of the series is determined by a points system based on head-to-head competition in the 13 sports in which the two schools compete.

Senior Jaime Forman-Lau earned the win for the Broncos' first contest, while sophomore Liz Courter picked up the win after pitching five innings in the matinee.

Clee's homer came in the top of the fourth inning and went to right center, bringing in second baseman Jenny Brown, who reached on a single. It put the Broncos ahead 4-0.

San Jose State scored in the bottom of that inning on back-to-back doubles by Michelle Newbold and Elisa Barrios. Vanessa Werner and Valerie Mock added three hits each for SCU.

Santa Clara was held to only one hit in the first five innings of the second game, but went up 2-0 in the sixth, and added four runs in the final inning. On the night, the Broncos out-hit the Spartans 26-9.

The Broncos return to the field on Friday, visiting 15th-ranked Fresno State for a 6 p.m. doubleheader. On Sunday, Santa Clara will host its home opener, against Virginia. First pitch is scheduled for noon at Marsalli Park. Admission is free.
