Box Score

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University softball team defeated Cal Poly 7-0 and 4-1 in a non-conference doubleheader today at Bob Janssen Field in San Luis Obispo. The Broncos are now 11-17 on the season while the Mustangs fall to 12-17.

"This was a great way to end our Spring Break," SCU head coach Marcy Crouch said. "It was probably our best doubleheader of the year. The team chemistry and energy was there all 14 innings and it was great to come out with two wins."

The Broncos' offense was strong early, as the team scored four runs in the first inning of the opener. SCU added three to the scoreboard in the third. Cal Poly was limited to three hits while committing three errors. Jaime Forman-Lau earned the win, striking out eight.

Two Mustang errors and a walk loaded the bases for the Broncos. With one out on the board, centerfielder Angela Kabanuck and catcher Rachel Sherman each hit RBI singles for Santa Clara. Cal Poly recorded an out at home plate, but Forman-Lau's single to center field brought in the remaining runners for two more scores.

In the third, Liz Courter registered an RBI single, while Brown's single later in the inning was good for two RBIs.

In the second contest, the Broncos took a 1-0 lead in the third, with the help of two Cal Poly errors and another Kabanuck RBI single. Shannon Linerud added an RBI single in the fifth, while Sherman notched two RBIs in the seventh.

Cal Poly scored its one run in the fifth. Catcher Erin Myers hit a one-out double to left center and moved to third with pinch hitter Rebecca Ramos' single to left field. Second baseman Roni Sparrey earned the RBI with her single up the middle.

The Broncos return home for a four-game homestand at Marsalli Park. Santa Clara will begin against Pacific on Wednesday at 1 p.m. The Broncos will then open Pacific Coast Softball Conference play with two days of action against Portland State. Saturday and Sunday doubleheaders will both start at noon. On Tuesday, April 6, the Broncos will host UC Davis at 2 p.m. Admission to all these contests is free.
