SUNNYVALE, Calif. - The Santa Clara University softball team defeated Virginia 3-0 this morning at the 18th Annual National Invitational Softball Tournament at Twin Creeks Sports Complex in Sunnyvale, Calif. The Broncos improve to 9-17 on the season.
Santa Clara scored the game-winning run in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Jenny Brown hit a double and was driven home on a double from sophomore Shannon Linerud to put the Broncos on the board.
The Broncos added two more runs, one in the top of the second and one in the top of the fourth to give them a cushion.
Despite many scoring opportunities, the Santa Clara defense, led from the circle by senior pitcher Jaime Forman-Lau, shut down the Virginia offense. Virginia stranded nine runners on base.
"It was a real battle out there," head coach March Crouch said. "We managed to get ourselves out of some tight situations."
Forman-Lau takes the win for the Broncos and improves to 8-12.
Santa Clara will return to action on March 27 as they take on Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The first pitch is slated for noon.
