A Season to Remember
The Santa Clara University softball team recently completed its season, capturing the Pacific Coast Softball Conference Championship and posting 30 wins. Head Coach Marcy Crouch concluded her fifth season on the mission campus with her second straight PCSC Coach of the Year honors.
Forman-Lau Rewriting Pitching Records
Senior Jamie Forman-Lau rewrote the Bronco pitching annals in only two years. She set a new strike out mark of 557 and graduates second in wins (46), ERA (1.39) and shut outs (21). She holds the top two spots for Ks in a single season, as well as wins and shut outs and is listed in the top five in ERA, starts, complete games and innings pitched. Additionally, Forman-Lau finished the season ranked 13th nationally in victories, with 25.
Forman-Lau, Clee Net Six PCSC Weekly Honors
Santa Clara senior Jaime Forman-Lau and sophomore Jessica Clee paired together on two occasions this season to sweep weekly conference honors. On March 9 and again on April 30, Forman-Lau was named the PCSC Pitcher of the week, while outfielder Clee earned Player of the Week honors.
On March 9, Clee started six games, batting a team-leading .429. She brought in six RBIs, including a two-run homerun against San Jose State. In fact, she went 5-5 against the Spartans.
Forman-Lau posted a 1.37 ERA, striking out 35 batters, while only allowing four earned runs. She struck out 11 batters against No. 15 Fresno State and offensively, went 2-2 at the plate against Virginia, including a two-out triple to register two RBIs.
On April 30, Clee batted an impressive .750 in four games against San Diego, going 6-8 at the plate. She notched six RBIs, and scored five runs. Two of her hits were home runs, including a grand slam. She added a triple to her totals and did not strike out during any plate appearances. Forman-Lau threw a perfect game against the Toreros, striking out nine. She posted a 3-0 record on the week, striking out 28.
Forman-Lau earned the honors on two other occasions. On the April 21 honor, she went 3-1 in the circle and struck out 26 batters in 26 innings without allowing a single walk. An offensive threat as well, Forman-Lau batted .444, going 4-9 at the plate. She hit a home run against Saint Mary's and finished with weekend with two RBIs and one run scored. Forman-Lau named the final honor of the regular season on May 4, when she led the Broncos in a sweep of Sacramento State to capture the PCSC Championship. She won all three games to push her current win streak to nine. Forman-Lau posted a 0.31 ERA on the weekend, pitching 22 innings and allowing only one earned run. She struck out 27 batters.
Marsalli Park
Located at the corner of Lafayette and El Camino Real, Larry J. Marsalli Park has been home of Santa Clara softball for 25 years. Open space, restrooms, off-street parking, a lighted softball field, and a neighborhood recreation building are included in this beautifully landscaped seven-acre park. The dimensions of the softball field are 235 feet to straight-away center field and 210 feet down the left and right field lines. The park was formerly known as Lafayette Park and was renamed in 1998 in honor of the former mayor, council member and volunteer firefighter, Larry Marsalli, who also served for more than 50 years as the chairman of the Santa Clara Parade of Champions.
