RENO, Nev. - The Santa Clara softball team fell twice to University of Nevada Saturday afternoon at Hixson Park in Reno, Nev. In the first game of the doubleheader freshman Catherine Surane hit her first career grand slam in the 15-7 loss. In the final game of the day, the Broncos were shutout 12-0 by the Wolf Pack.

In the early game, Amanda Edmonson hit a single to left field to score Briana Knight for the Broncos first run in the fourth inning. The following inning SCU rallied back with six runs after being down 9-1. Breann Netto led off the high scoring inning with a single to right field to bring home Jackie Nicora. Two batters later Surane blasted the ball over the left field wall to hit her first career homer and grand slam, scoring Kristin Welsh, Netto and Christine Prochnow. The Broncos hit back-to-back home runs, as Edmonson, the next batter up, homered over the left field wall.

After their high scoring inning, SCU kept Nevada from scoring in the bottom of the fifth. In the sixth, Santa Clara could not repeat their successful fifth inning and could not get on the board. In the bottom of the sixth the Wolf Pack concluded the game with six runs.

In the second game, UN defeated the Broncos 12-0 in five innings. Santa Clara struggled to get their offense going in the game, as they only had three hits in the game. Knight tallied two hits for her 20th and 21st hits of the season, and catcher Emily Batt had SCU's final hit.

Batt singled to left field in the second inning for the Broncos' first hit of the game. In the third inning third, Knight doubled to center field and in the fifth inning she singled to left field. Playing in the field for the first time was junior Lauren Passafuime, who took over first base duties. In her first game in the field, she tallied a walk in two at bats.

SCU, 4-16 overall, looks to bounce back on Sunday versus the Wolf Pack. They close out the weekend series at noon.
