Softball Drops Season Series to SJSU

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Santa Clara softball team dropped their season series against San Jose State Tuesday afternoon at SJSU Field. The Broncos opened up the doubleheader with a 7-1 loss, and fell 9-1 in five innings to close out the day. SCU's (5-27) offense was halted against the hosting Spartans (15-23), as both Bronco runs scored came in their final offensive innings.

Santa Clara shortstop Kristin Welsh had the strongest combined offensive outing against SJSU. In game one, she went 1-for-2 with a single to right field in the third inning. She also reached after getting hit by a pitch in the top of the first. She led off the SCU lineup in the second game and was responsible for the lone Bronco run. Welsh went 1-for-2, for the second straight game, and had a RBI and a walk.

In the early game, SCU dropped a 7-1 decision to San Jose State. After six scoreless innings, Megan Smith, who went 1-for-3, singled to left field to score Stephanie Smith for M. Smith's fourth RBI of the season. Third baseman Amanda Edmonson also posted a hit in the game. In the top of the first she singled to left center.

The Broncos suffered their seventh straight loss of the season, in the second game of the doubleheader, 9-1. SCU could only tally three hits to SJSU's 10. Edmonson went 1-for-2 in the fourth inning with a single to first base. Jeanine Ruffoni followed with a single to second in the fifth. The Bronco third baseman went 1-for-2 in the game.

Santa Clara heads to Portland, Ore. on April 4-5, to open up conference play at Portland State in a two-day doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon on both Saturday and Sunday.
