Softball Comes Up on Wrong End of Pitcher's Duel at Sacramento State

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – In a pitcher's duel, a duo of Sacramento State pitchers lifted the Hornets over Aubree Kim and Santa Clara softball 3-1 Wednesday evening.

Danielle Sperry started for Sacramento State (21-11) and lasted 5 1/3 innings while allowing a run on four hits with five walks and two strikeouts but got a no-decision. Celina Matthias (13-4) tossed the final 1 2/3 innings to pick up the win.

Kim (2-12) went the distance for the Broncos (5-28) but took the hard luck loss while allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

After Santa Clara evened the score at 1-all in the top of the sixth, Sacramento State came right back with two of its own in the bottom half of the frame. With two down and runners on second and third, Nene Alas singled to left field to bring in the winning runs.

Alas was 2-for-4 from the leadoff spot and Sydnee Strong also added a pair of hits with a double and a run scored.

Santa Clara scored its run on a sacrifice fly from Jordan Dawkins. Five Broncos collected a hit each with Ellie Fisher smacking a double.
