CALIMESA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's golf team shot two rounds under 300 Monday afternoon at the first round of the UC Irvine Anteater Invitational held at the SCPGA Champions Course in Calimesa, Calif.

After struggling to find a groove in their first two Spring Tournaments, the Broncos seem to have found their swing at the Anteater Invite. Santa Clara fired rounds of 293 and 298 to finish the first day in fifth place.

St. John's sits atop the leaderboard after rounds of 287 and 291, while San Jose State trails the Red Storm by only four strokes. UC Riverside and UC Irvine sit in third and fourth place after compiling two round totals of 588 and 590, respectively.

Jesse Fitzgerald of St. John's and Torey Edwards of Long Beach State each share the individual lead after posting a two-round total of 2-under par, 142. Matt Klenz from Santa Clara trails by only one stroke after rounds of 74 and 69, while Sandy Horacek is tied for sixth place at even-par after the first two rounds of the tournament.

"We put forth another good effort today," said Santa Clara head coach John Kennaday. "The guys are really starting to see some of their hard work pay off on the course and that is exciting for us."

The third and final round of the tournament will begin early Tuesday morning at the 7,009-yard, par-72 course in Southern California.
