CALIMESA, Calif. - Santa Clara University's men's golf team moved up one spot on the final day of the UC Irvine Anteater Invitational to finish fourth at the SCPGA Champions Course in Calimesa, Calif.
The Broncos shot the second lowest score of the day to move ahead of UC Riverside and finish just 11 strokes behind the champions, St. John's. The Red Storm finished the tournament with a three-round total of 884, 4 strokes ahead of San Jose State and five shots better than host UC Irvine.
Individually the Broncos had two players finish with a three round total of 2-over par, 218, qualifying them for a six-way playoff for Medalist honors. Santa Clara freshman Matt Klenz knocked an approach shot within a foot of the cup on the first extra hole to claim the top spot over teammate Sandy Horacek and two players each from St. Johns and UC Irvine.
The win gives Klenz his first collegiate tournament win and his second best three-round total of his career on the Mission Campus. Earlier this season Klenz fired a 1-over par, 217, for the three rounds at the Cal State Bakersfield Invitational.
"The finish today was very exciting," said head coach John Kennaday. "Both Matt and Sandy played tough in tough conditions. It is too bad that both of them couldn't be called champions today because they both played like ones."
The fourth place finish for the team matches the fourth place finishes at the Bronco Invitational and the University of Hawaii Invitational in the fall. The Broncos will continue the spring season at the Western Intercollegiate on April 8 and 9 in Santa Cruz, Calif. Following the Western Intercollegiate the Broncos will play in the WCC Championships in Fresno, Calif. on April 14-16.
