SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University senior golfer Sandy Horacek shot a four-over par 74 on day one at the 101st U.S. Amateur Open at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga. The three-year letterwinner at Santa Clara will tee-off at 2:09 p.m. on the first hole of the Druid Hills Golf Club in an attempt to make the 64-man field that will comprise the match-play portion of the tournament.
Horacek teed off on the 10th hole of the East Lake Golf Club at 9:24 a.m. this morning and struggled early, bogeying five of his first eight holes and finishing his front nine with a three-over par 38. Playing much better on the back nine, firing a one-over par 36, Horacek placed himself only four strokes out of the top 64 after day one.
The early tee-time on Tuesday might favor Horacek on Druid Hills as the low round of the day was fired early on at the par-72 course. Lucas Glover of Greenville, SC sits in first place after day one, shooting an eight-under par 64 on the Druid Hills Course. Robert Godfrey of Clemson, SC is alone in second place after firing a competitive course record seven-under par 63 at the par-70 East Lake Golf Club.
All players will tee it up for round two on Tuesday, playing the course they did not play on Monday, with the top 64 players moving on to the match play portion of the tournament that will run from Wednesday through Sunday at the East Lake course.
