KAUAI, Hawaii – Junior Hayden Shieh carded the best round of the day with a 6-under 66 leading Santa Clara men's golf to a share of fourth place with a 6-under 570 after two rounds of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, competed on the 6,991-yard, par-72 Wailua Golf Course in Lihu'e, Kaua'i.

Shieh equaled his low round for the season and helped the Broncos climb a spot on the team leaderboard with a season-low round of 5-under 283. They'll enter Friday's final round 19 shots behind leader and No. 4 ranked Virginia.

"They're striking the ball and putting well, getting us in a good position," head coach Rob Miller said of his team, which is tied with 46th ranked BYU and ahead of No. 45 New Mexico (577), No. 41 Washington (580) and No. 25 Kennesaw State (582) in the loaded field.

With his two-round total of 7-under 137, Shieh is tied for third with Cal's Collin Morikawa heading into the final 18 holes. The two are one shot behind Virginia's Jimmy Stanger and just four shots behind leader Chandler Phillips of Texas A&M.

The Broncos also got a below-par round from sophomore Charlie Watson, who scored a 1-under 71 to sit in a tie for 19th at 2-over 142. Freshman Matt McCarty was at even-par 72 today and holds down a tie for 22nd at 1-over 143.

"It was a pretty darn good finish for the boys today. It was fun to watch," Miller added. "To play this well in a field this good is a positive. The guys are happy to be playing head-to-head with some of the best teams and players in the country."

With a pair of 74s, Michiel Eyre III is tied for 59th in the 109-player field at 4-over 148. Playing in his first collegiate tournament, Hassan Said is tied for 98th at 10-ver 154.

Competing as an individual, Derek Ackerman whittled three shots off his first round score by firing a 1-over 73 today. His 6-over 150 puts him in a tie for 73rd.

"We're confident," Miller said about the final round. "We're just going to play our game and not worry about anything else."

Final round play begins at 10:30 a.m. PT with live scoring available at golfstat.com.
