Meet the Men's Golf Team - Jonathan Keane

Feb. 25, 2009

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - In between tournaments, senior men's golfer Jonathan Keane sat down with SantaClaraBroncos.com to talk golf, his future plans, and favorites. Keane is the lone senior on the Bronco squad and brings a wealth of experience to the lineup. During the fall season, Keane boasted two top-ten finishes.

Q: How long have you been playing golf for?
A:
Competitively since I was 11 and just playing around since I was about eight.

Q: Why did you decide to come to Santa Clara and play golf?
A:
The typical reasons kids come. It is just far enough away from home to feel like you away but not too far. For golf, obviously the nice weather and all of the golf courses around here are pretty amazing. There are just tons of good courses all the way from Pebble Beach down in Monterey to San Francisco. The school had a lot to offer academically, as well.

Q: Do you have any rituals before a tournament?
A:
Not really rituals. We all kind of go through our routines warming up and stuff but I don't really have any lucky charms. I do mark my golf ball the same way every time but most of the guys do that.

Q: Do you have a favorite memory from your golf career?
A:
I made a hole-in-one last year and that was pretty cool. It was at the WCC Championships We got up there a day early and played my home course, so it was me and the four guys that traveled for the tournament. It was on a par-four so that was really cool. Everyone was really excited! Another favorite memory I have was when I had the chance to play at Augusta National when I was younger. I was with my grandfather and he knows a member out there. That is where they have the Masters every year.

Q: Who is your favorite golfer and why?
A:
Obviously Tiger but besides Tiger I would say Geoff Ogilvy. Tiger I like because of everything he has done and his competitive nature. I would say Geoff Ogilvy has a really classic, smooth golf swing and he is tall like me. It is kind of something I like to look at just for my own benefit.

Q: If you could play golf with any three others for a foursome, who would it be?
A:
I guess my dad, grandfather, and probably Tiger.

Q: Do you play any other sports?
A:
I used to swim in high school competitively. I did the 100m and 200m free, and I had five school records at my high school. I was thinking about doing that collegiately but I liked golf a little bit more so I went this path. Right now, I am not doing anything competitively outside of golf.

Q: What is your major and minor?
A:
Finance major, economics minor.

Q: What do you want to do after you graduate from Santa Clara?
A:
I am still considering golf and maybe playing professionally. If that doesn't work out, I want to use my finance major. Ideally, I would like run some sort of a money management firm trading stocks and futures.

Q: What is your favorite home cooked meal?
A:
My grandma makes Swedish Meatballs every Christmas and that is delicious. It is our annual Christmas Eve dinner.

Q: What is your favorite music and artist?
A:
I would say Dave Matthews is my favorite artist. Dave Matthews or Jack Johnson.

Q: Favorite vacation location?
A:
Probably Hawaii, the big island. Either Hawaii or Cozumel.

Q: One last question. If you were stranded on an island and could have three things, what would they be?
A:
A TV with cable, a really, really comfortable mattress...one of those with memory foam, and a golf course on the island.
