Men’s Soccer Loses In Overtime To VCU On Sunday
RICHMOND, Va. – Santa Clara men's soccer battled VCU through 90 minutes of scoreless play in regulation but conceded the golden goal seven minutes into overtime and lost, 1-0, on Sunday night in a nonconference tilt.

"For the group to travel cross country and compete the way they did, I could not fault them.  The team battled hard coming back after a lackluster performance on Friday.  In general we did a good job containing a solid team in VCU," said Broncos head coach Cam Rast.

An NCAA Tournament team last season, VCU (3-1) scored in the 97th minute when Ryo Shimazaki dribbled up the right side for 25 yards and blasted a shot that was punched out by Bronco goalkeeper Dakota Havlick.  Unfortunately for the Broncos, the ball landed right at Siad Haji's boot inside the 18 and kicked it into the goal.

"We got into a situation where we gave away a second chance goal and you cannot do that against a good team," said Rast.

In the first ever meeting between the two schools, the Broncos (1-3) and the Rams played evenly in the first half with neither team creating many chances as each team had six shots apiece.

The Rams pressed the action in the opening 15 minutes of the second half, getting off seven of its 13 shots in the half during that time frame.  One of the more challenging moments of the match came in the 57th minute when Rams midfielder Eli Lockaby unleashed a blast inside the 18 that Havlick parried away for one of his eight saves on the night for the senior captain.

In the 84th minute, the Broncos had an opportunity when freshman defender Sakari Carter's header off a corner kick just missed the mark to the right of the post.

NEXT UP:
The Broncos plays the third of five consecutive road matches at Missouri State on Monday, Sept. 10.

NOTES:
Dylan Carrubba saw his most extensive playing time this season logging 41 minutes.
• Havlick made a season-high eight saves.
