STORY: Athletic Excellence on the Rise | VIDEO: Stephen C. and Patricia A. Schott Athletic Excellence Center
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Stephen C. and Patricia A. Schott Athletic Excellence Center project is one step closer to completion.
On Friday, the Santa Clara's Board of Trustees approved the 50,000-square-foot, two-story athletic facility which will be located adjacent to Leavey Center.
The state-of-the-art building, which will be funded by donations and open in the summer of 2020, will provide dedicated space for Santa Clara student-athletes to work out, practice, eat, and study together.
The facility features:
• 4,200-square-foot Stevens Academic Center
• Two practice gymnasiums (Dick Davey Court and Carroll Williams Court) for basketball and volleyball
• 10,000-square-foot Bronco Bench Foundation Sports Performance Center
• Sports medicine center
• Nutrition station
The AEC triples the amount of space student-athletes currently have for practice, academics, training, nutrition and medical care.
The facility will also open up much-needed options for campus events and for the student body to participate in club and intramural sports on Dick Davey Court.
In November, Santa Clara received gifts from alumni and longtime supporters of Santa Clara University - $15 million from Stephen C. '60 and Patricia A. Schott and $10 million from Mary '84 and Mark Stevens.
The school has raised $32 million for the project, which has been pegged to cost roughly $38 million.
"This is another exciting day for not only our department, but Santa Clara University," Director of Athletics Renee Baumgartner said. "Our student-athletes, coaches, staff and I would like to thank the Board of Trustees for their incredible support. This is a monumental day for Santa Clara Athletics. This gives us a chance to compete at the highest level."
Groundbreaking is expected this spring.
