Former Women's Basketball Player, Head Coach Horstmeyer to Enter WCC Hall of Honor

SAN BURNO, Calif. – Former women's basketball player and coach Caren (Choppelas) Horstmeyer will be on of 10 inductees to the West Coast Conference Hall of Honor, the league announced on Thursday.

The other inductees are: BYU's Tiffany Lott-Hogan (track), Gonzaga's Adam Morrison (men's basketball), Loyola Marymount's Tara Welling (Erdmann) (cross country/track), Pacific's Jayne McHugh (volleyball), Pepperdine's Gualberto Escudero (tennis), Portland's Stephanie Lopez Cox (soccer), Saint Mary's Trevor Newquist (soccer), San Diego's Ali Cox (rowing), and San Francisco's Orlando Smart (basketball).

It is the 11th annual Hall of Honor class and will be recognized Saturday, March 9 during the 2019 WCC Hall of Honor Brunch at the Mardi Gras ballroom in the Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas.

Horstmeyer starred on the court for the Broncos from 1981-84 and, at the time, set the record for most career points in program history with 1,496, now third. She is also in the top 10 in field goals made (No. 3 - 592), scoring average (No. 5 - 14.0), field goal attempts (No. 1 - 1,477), free throws made (No. 7 - 312), free throw attempts (No. 4 - 515), and steals (No. 6 - 166).

After her standout career on the court, Horstmeyer became the head coach. In 12 seasons leading the Broncos, she posted a record of 221-124 (.641), taking home six regular season WCC titles and two WCC Tournament championships while making four NCAA Tournament appearances and winning the 1991 WNIT.

She served as head coach of the East team at the U.S. Olympic Festival in 1993, and has been active on selection committees for the U.S. national team since leaving the Mission campus. Horstmeyer, a two-time WCC Coach of the Year ('91 and '93) received the Converse Coach of the Year Award and the Kodak All-American Team Award.

Tickets to the WCC Hall of Honor Brunch & Induction Ceremony are available to the public for $40 and may be purchased by contacting Lindsey Jones in the WCC office via email – Ljones@westcoast.org. Tickets must be purchased by Monday, February 25.
