Benita Martin enters her second season as an assistant coach to the Bronco program. She is the team's recruiting coordinator and coaches the guard position as well as works with Bronco Basketball camps.

Martin joined Santa Clara in May 2000 from UC Irvine, where she was an assistant coach there from 1997-2000, serving two of those years with Bronco assistant coach Jeff Dow. Martin also coached at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee during the 1996-97 season. From 1993 through '96, she was an assistant at the University of Northern Colorado, a Division II school. During the 1994-95 campaign, she helped lead the Bears to a pair of program firsts: a national ranking and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Martin began her coaching career as an assistant at Metro State College in Denver, Colo., where from 1990-93, her teams posted a 60-22 (.732) record and back-to-back winning seasons.

"Besides relating extremely well to our players, she's a fabulous recruiter, as fans will soon see by this year's incoming class," head coach Chris Denker said. "As a player, she was a guard on an undefeated team, so she knows what it means to win and helps our guards understand that."

As a player, Martin was a junior college All-American in 1988 while at Barton County Community College in Great Bend, Kan. She transferred to the University of Colorado, where she earned honorable mention All-Big Eight accolades in 1990 while helping the Buffaloes to a perfect 17-0 conference record and a No. 9 national ranking.

She graduated in 1992 with a degree in communications, followed by a master's in sports administration in 1996. Martin resides in Santa Clara.
