Women's Rowing Wraps Regular Season, Set for WIRAs

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's rowing took on Saint Mary's and UC Davis on April 18 at the Port of Sacramento. The Broncos competed in the Varsity 8, 2nd Varsity 8, and the Varsity Four. For full results, click here.

"The Tuesday before the race we lost four student-athletes to injury that took them out of practice and competition for the week," said Santa Clara head coach John Wojtkiewicz. "We hope to have them back this week but there was one critical athlete missing from each crew and the impact those missing athletes had cannot be understated. Given the circumstances I think we actually stepped up and dealt with it the best we could. I was quite proud of how we all came together to manage the situation and put our best face forward. We're looking forward to getting everyone back out on the water this week to prepare for WIRAs."

Next up for the Broncos is the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships beginning Fri., April 24 and running through Sun., April 26.

"If we can have all boats move onto the grand finals, that would make a great weekend," said Wojtkiewicz. "The last few weeks have been tough with some injuries but we're working our way past it, and going to use this as a solid jumping off point for WCCs."

Wojtkiewicz has been pleased with the improvement made by the Varsity 8 over the course of the season. He knows the whole team must stay committed to getting better to get the desired results this weekend.

"The consistency of the Varsity 8 performance has been the biggest improvement this year," said Wojtkiewicz. "Even when we have a bad day it's pretty good compared to what we've had in past years. Knowing that we have such a young crew is just terrific looking ahead over the next few seasons. The most important thing for us will be preparation for and commitment to our goals for the weekend. As long as we stay focused on those goals I think we can have a great weekend."
