SANTA CLARA, Calif. — On this week's edition of the Bronco weekly sports wrap, hosts and student-athletes Denzel Johnson and Nici Gilday get you caught up on the latest in Bronco sports. Five Bronco teams finished out their regular seasons last week, one Bronco took to the links as part of an NCAA Championship and one Bronco team earned a spot to compete in the postseason.
Men's rowing continued its stellar 50th anniversary season at the Western Sprints Regatta by having its Varsity 8 boat qualify for the IRA Championship Regatta. It marks the first time in program history that a men's Varsity eight boat has qualified for nationals.
The Bronco boat took second place with a time of 6:20.50 in the 2,000 meter race at Lake Natoma.Santa Clara finished just one second behind Oklahoma City University in a five-boat field that was separated by less than seven seconds. EYEBRONCO spoke with Michael Brewer, who rowed in the stroke seat, about the team's performance. The championship regatta will be held May 29-31 at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.
The women's rowing team also closed out its regular season at Lake Natoma in the WCC Championships. Junior Molly Walker and sophomore Brittany Peters were named to the all-conference team for their performances.
Men's golfer Hayden Shieh competed at the Farms Golf Club in San Diego as part of the NCAA Championships last week. The WCC Freshman of the Year shot a two-over 74 on Thursday's opening round and finished with a three-day total of 229.
Baseball went 2-2 to complete its season last week. The Broncos won 2-1 in extra innings over San Jose State Tuesday and defeated BYU 8-7 Friday at Schott Stadium. The team won 10 of its last 14 games and eight of its last 11 conference games. Santa Clara recorded a seven-game overall winning streak and five-game WCC winning streak as part of the stretch; each is the best such streak under head coach Dan O'Brien.
Track finished out its regular season at the Portland Twilight meet on Sunday. A total of 12 Broncos ran in the competition. Best of luck to the runners as they await NCAA regional placement.
Following the sport updates, Denzel and Nici bid farewell to Michelle Young, former Assistant Athletic Director and Director of Media Relations for SCU athletics. Young was one of the founders of EYEBRONCO in 2009.
