SANTA CLARA, Calif. — On this week's edition of the Bronco Weekly Sports Wrap, hosts and student-athletes Denzel and Johnson and Nici Gilday get you caught up on Bronco sports. Last week marked the first spring West Coast Conference championship of 2015 and five more Bronco teams all have championships on the line in the coming days. We begin the episode with Bronco golf, which wrapped up the WCC championships last week at the Saticoy Country Club in Somis, Calif.
Men's golf wrapped up it season with a ninth place finish at the WCC Championships. Hayden Shieh finished tied for 16th place and was named conference Freshman of the Year. It is the second consecutive win for Santa Clara in the category with Tyler Kertson taking the honor last year, and the first time since 2006 that a WCC school has won consecutive freshman of the year awards (LMU).
The women's golf team finished in third place at the WCC Championships. Kristen Le was named First Team All-WCC as well. She was one of only four golfers to shoot a 78 or better on each of the event's last two days.
Baseball had a thrilling walk-off victory in the 10th inning vs. Stanford last Tuesday, winning the game on an RBI single from Joe Becht. The Broncos traveled to No. 6 TCU over the weekend and were swept by the Horned Frogs. They are back at Schott Stadium this week for a Tuesday game vs. Cal Poly and then return to conference action Friday night versus Gonzaga.
Softball fell at No. 15 Cal in a midweek game before heading down south to face San Diego. The Broncos won series finale on Sunday. They return home to face Pacific on Saturday and Sunday.
Women's water polo finished the regular season with a split at home. After dropping a match to LMU they bounced back with a big 14-6 win over Azusa Pacific on Senior Day. EYEBRONCO caught up with Julia Peters, who scored seven goals Saturday, to talk about the weekend. Next up is the Gold Coast Conference Championships beginning Thursday in Stockton.
Sand volleyball played a pair of matches last week. After falling at Cal, the Broncos came back with a 5-0 win over Saint Mary's. EYEBRONCO spoke with Mary Shepherd and Sarah Vaccaro after Friday's matchup with the Gaels. They finish the season this week at Pacific on Tuesday and at Stanford on Thursday.
Men's tennis had a good 3-0 week picking up a win vs. Sacramento State as well over conference foes Gonzaga and Portland. The Broncos have won four of their last five matches entering the West Coast Conference championships, which begin Wednesday at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego. They match up with the No. 9 seed Gonzaga in the opening round.
Women's tennis had a tough trip to the Northwest, falling to Gonzaga and Portland. They too will head to San Diego for the WCC Championships beginning Wednesday against the No. 10 seed, LMU.
Track competed at both the Mt. SAC Relays and Bryan Clay Invitational over the weekend. Six of the 12 Broncos that ran set personal best marks, including a school record 10,000 meter effort by Mary Kriege and school record 1500 meter effort by Joey Berriatua. EYEBRONCO caught up with Kriege to talk about the weekend. Kriege is the school record holder in the 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000 meter track events. The team returns to action this week at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Berkeley on Friday and Saturday.
Women's rowing faced Saint Mary's last weekend but couldn't come away with a win in three events. Both the men's and women's teams now head to Lake Natoma for the WIRA Championships beginning on Friday.
